Camp Red Wing and the Delaware County Council of Boy Scouts
Patches were not popular in the early years. Here are a few that we have been able to locate.
This is probably the oldest patch from Camp Red Wing. It was awarded to Thomas J. Tighe in 1926 as an "Honor Camper" and was worn on a sweater. It measures 4 3/4". I also have his 3" version that was worn on the uniform. Only one patch was given each week of summer camp. There were 3 weeks of camp each summer.
Summer Camp patches at Red Wing (as we know them today) did not appear until 1957. Shown at the right is a 1957 (Indian) and a 1958 Patch
Felt Winter Camp Patches
Delaware County Council offered week long Winter Camp. These early felt patches are from 1949 and 1951
1955 - 1956 - 1957 Wapihani Pow Wow
The Wapihani Pow Wow was held in Muncie
along the White River. (Wapihani is a Delaware
Indian name for White River.) This was a Council event and not an OA event.
1960 Summer Camp Patch
Starting in 1959, this attribute to Indian Jim, was used on many of the Red Wing camp patches. Jim Musco, a Native American from the Delaware Indians, lived on the Rees farm. This land was to become the home of Camp Red Wing. The image was drawn by Tom Ryan, a Muncie native, who drew the "Tumbleweeds" cartoon strip that appeared in many newspapers across the country.
